Risk assessment of alternative litter types

Summary

The chicken meat industry requires reliable supplies of safe highquality litter for meat chicken production. The Australian industry predominantly utilises straw, wood shavings or sawdust depending on region, however the supply and cost of litter products has increased substantially over recent years, and future supply of wood products may be constrained. This has forced the industry to investigate and use alternative litters, with inconsistent quality and performance outcomes. This project will provide an industryfocused risk assessment method to assess alternative litters to enable the industry to make better alternative litter choices.

Objective Summary

Specific objectives of this project are: 1. Summarise the common hazards and risks that are applicable to alternative litter 2. Develop a risk assessment method for alternative litters 3. Risk assessment of preferred alternative litters previously identified in AgriFutures Australia Project No PRJ010655, and document this in a report for the industry.
