  • National Priority: TIA - Waste

Summary

Australian primary industries, which includes agriculture, fisheries and forestry, produce a signification amount of bi-product and waste. Pre-farm gate waste, which is the focus on this project, includes plastics, organic matter and other inputs (e.g., fertiliser and pesticides). Increased adoption of practices is imperative if Australia is to meet its waste management targets. However, we first we need to understand the risks and benefits.

This project will focus on identifying the gaps in the primary industry sector’s ability to make change. This project will explore the risks and benefits to the sector in applying the waste hierarchy and circular economy frameworks, as well as practical solutions to pre-farm gate waste implementation.

The project will deliver:

  • Gap analysis – what needs to change
  • Options analysis – of waste solutions
  • Feasibility assessment of preferred options
  • Blueprint – of fit-for-purpose solutions to improve pre-farm gate waste management across industries.

RMCG and the project consortium have expertise in waste management, recycling processes, data collection, specific sectors, strategic planning and practice change. Our consortium is currently involved in waste data projects across the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors which will allow us to hit the ground running.

There are efficiencies in the engagement components between AgriFutures project 1.1 and Program 3 and we would make adjustments in budgets to reflect this should the opportunity arise. We aim to avoid ‘engagement fatigue’ and will collaborate with related projects to design a united approach.
