The planned conference is a “Pollination Conference”. The aim is to provide the critical information required to improve the pollination in lucerne seed crops. Lucerne Australia will work with the Honeybee Industry Strategic Plan Implementation Committee (HISPIC), RIRDC Honeybee & Pasture Seeds committees. The main groups targeted to attend the conference and the desired outcomes aimed for will be; Lucerne & pasture seed industry AIM to quantify to growers (and others) the importance of bee’s in the production system Honey bee industry AIM to demonstrate the importance of pollination to the pasture seeds industry (not just as a source for honey production) Researchers scientists AIM to assist in visualising what projects need doing and to form linkages within the bee & pasture seed industries, It is expected that there will be a lot of interest and flow on to other industries in the area such as beans, canola, lupins, almonds, apples & multiple clover species.

The “Pollination conference is an exciting initiative and is set to be the highlight of the year for growers, apiarists & associated industry. This day will give producers who are looking to find ways of improving yield through better pollination, highlighting the importance of the pollination industry to apiarists and give local researchers opportunity to listen to a world leader in lucerne seed pollination technique. It is well recognised by many within our industry, and from those who visit from abroad that poor pollination is one of the key limiting factors in reaching the high yields achieved in other countries such as the United States. A lot of industry leaders recognise the importance of pollination, but it is not always appreciated by the growers. The pollination conference will aid in cementing in growers minds the importance of honey bees in their production system. It is days such as this are which help growers to realise what they have and give them the passion, desire and more importantly the information to achieve more. The conference will be held on September 16th 2009 at the Keith Institute from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
