Summary

The Limestone Coast region of South Australia is underpinned by primary production and due to the stability of its natural resources is critical for sustainable growth in primary production. Conditions and farming systems in the region are very favourable for carbon storage and emissions reductions implementation. Through our consultation with industry we have identified that adoption of carbon farming in the region is low despite the high potential. To address this and create an environment for accelerated adoption the Limestone Coast Landscape Board is developing and implementing a ‘Carbon Smart Land Management’ Roadmap to create a strategic and local approach to carbon farming. Preliminary work has identified that primary producers are looking for practical, common sense, and place based methods to manage carbon in their farming. The Roadmap will create a pathway to overcome this barrier by condensing the overwhelming volume of carbon farming information into practical actions that are specifically relevant to the conditions and farming systems in the region. It will accelerate adoption by creating the practical steps a primary producer can take to enter carbon farming in a low risk way. Working in partnership with industry the project will also raise the practical profile of carbon farming and the benefits to primary production systems. Through a partnership with AgriFutures Australia the project will be extended beyond the Roadmap to include the development of a self-assessment tool for primary producers to identify the specific carbon management practices relevant to their enterprise to accelerate integration into their current systems.
