  • Project start date: Friday, November 22, 2013

  • Project completion date: Monday, June 2, 2014

  • National Priority: NAP - Indigenous Pastoral Project

Summary

Under PRJ-008777, McClelland Rural Services developed a step-by-step manual to provide Indigenous communities, with a clear pathway if they wish to develop their pastoral properties into commercially viable and sustainable enterprises.

Under PRJ-008953, PRJ-008957 and PRJ-008958, the manual has been trialled on at least three pilot properties within each of the jurisdictions. Following the completion of these trials, key learnings will be consolidated and, where appropriate, the manual will be amended for final use.

This project aims to utilise existing state extension networks and systems to extend the final manual to indigenous pastoralists within the three jurisdictions. The effectiveness of the manual in improving the skills and knowledge of pastoralists will then be evaluated by the state extension officers. Key findings from this evaluation process will be incorporated into any amendments or adjustments to the manual, in order to improve its relevance and effectiveness.

Evaluations will be performed using a standardised evaluation template, developed in partnership by the state jurisdictions and RIRDC. A pre- and post-extension evaluation of each pastoral enterprise engaged with the manual is required.
