Developing an Effective Diluent for Transport of Rabbit Semen

The University of Sydney

  • Project code: PRJ-005085

  • Project stage: Closed

  • Project start date: Monday, December 20, 2010

  • Project completion date: Thursday, January 1, 2015

  • National Priority: NAP-Enhance industry success through targeted industry-specific RD&E

Summary

The project will develop a formulation for semen diluent based on readily available ingredients in Australia; investigate the maximum transport time to ensure viable semen; undertake testing and documentation required to register the diluent for commercial use. The project will work with industry members currently using artificial insemination (AI) to build their capacity to ship semen to interstate locations. This will build capacity within the industry for commercial farmers to introduce AI and will provide a cost effective means of distribution of superior genetic material from key industry breeding programs.

Objective Summary

The project will develop a formulation for semen diluent based on readily available ingredients in Australia; investigate the maximum transport time to ensure viable semen; undertake testing and documentation required to register the diluent for commercial use. The project will build industry capacity and skills for AI, enabling effective distribution of semen from genetically superior rabbits.
