Date Industry Development Stage 2

The aim of our project is to obtain ‘new to Australia’, modern date palm varieties which can then be processed through the nursery, outplanted in the trial demonstration site and evaluated for commercial production to promote the Australian Date Industry. Our company has been importing elite date palms, preparing them for planting, planting them in trial sites and integrating into our R&D program to analyse performance to ensure the Australian date grower has available to them, best commercial selections. We seek financial support to assist our Australian network of growers to access a wider range of varieties so that industry development can occur confidently and growers can be assured that they have access to worldleading cultivars that are both in fashion and financially rewarding.

The objective is to analyse a wide range in variety of internationally significant date palm cultivars to evaluate the following: Climatic suitability Fruit yields Fruit quality Ease of management Pest and disease management Salinity tolerance Labour inputs Water/fertilizer usage Market acceptance $ per kilo return The scope of our work will be to narrow a broad range of varieties down to the best commercial selections. Date palms are noted for returning variable results in different locations and it is for this reason that we work very closely with our grower network to catalogue results throughout different interstate locations so that the best neighbourhood varieties are identified.
