Summary

The first two years of the Community Trust in Rural Industries project identified the following areas relevant to the grains industry where the community has high levels of uncertainty:

  • “The use of fertilisers by Australian farmers is necessary” (positive relationship with trust)
  • “The use of weed control chemicals in Australian rural industries worries me” (negative relationship with trust)
  • “Genetic modification of plants in Australian rural industries to make them more productive and resistant to pests worries me” (negative relationship with trust)

To better understand these areas of uncertainty and to explore how industry can address the risk they pose to community trust, Grains Research and Development Corporation proposes that a grains specific focal study be conducted during the 2021/22 financial year. The case study would utilise the established Community Trust in Rural Industries research methodologies, including learnings from focal studies that were undertaken in 2020/21 for the cotton, prawn trawling and a joint horticulture/sugar industries. The grains-specific focal study would bridge the gap between data insights and definable action, empowering industry to better address the potential trust impacts associated with the use of fertilisers, agricultural chemicals and biotechnology.
