Assessing the environmental sustainability of Australian primary foods

Summary

To develop an approach for describing the environmental sustainability of Australian livestock that considers both environmental impacts and its contribution to food security. A summary of recent Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) in Australian livestock (beef, lamb, pork, chicken meat and eggs) and implications of these findings for climate change mitigation and food security will be prepared. The combined benefit of achieving climate change mitigation and maintaining food security through production efficiencies will be discussed. The findings will be presented to key stakeholders at a workshop to achieve agreement on relevant food security indicators. This project will be conducted in parallel with a separate project, funded by MLA’s Human Nutrition Research Program and conducted by CSIRO investigating the impact of dietary strategies on the nutritional quality of the Australian diet as well as its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

Objective Summary

1. Critically review the environmental impacts and factors relevant to food security for Australian meat products (to be presented in the discussion paper and report). 2. Identify suitable indicators of food security for describing the environmental sustainability of Australian livestock (to be presented in the discussion paper and report). 3. Provide case study examples applying these indicators for Australian primary foods (to be presented in the discussion paper and report). 4. Disseminate this information to key stakeholders and researchers during workshops hosted by RIRDC 5. Disseminate findings in the form of workshop proceedings and publications. 6. Present findings on the sustainability of primary foods to the International Congress of Dietetics
