This report looks at the movement responses of waterbirds to changes in wetland availability and analyses interactions with landscape structure at local and regional scales in the rice-growing region of NSW and at broad scales across inland Australia so that predictions may be made about likely damage to rice crops.
The benefits of this research (conducted in collaboration with other funding bodies) to the rice industry is in knowing the nature and extent of waterfowl movements through the rice-growing region, the resources they utilise and the scale at which waterfowl populations must be managed. While the findings confirm some of what we thought we already knew about waterfowl, this project was the first to track ducks in Australia and provides a new insight into how these birds interact with the landscape.
