A common plant sown on the range by the free-range chicken meat industry is kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum). Kikuyu has its shortcomings, such as expensive seed, turning brown when dormant, and needing fertiliser and plenty of water to stay green. This project investigated other plant options that are cheaper to establish, such as grazing-tolerant lucerne, cocksfoot grass, rhizome-forming tall fescue and chicory, to provide ground coverage on commercial free-range chicken meat farms.
