The Horse RD&E Program invests in projects targeted at the Australian horse industry and is part of the RIRDC portfolio that addresses animal industries in the rural sector. The Horse Program is funded by voluntary levies and supported by a RIRDC allocation of core funding. The stakeholders of the horse industry have recognised the research funding uncertainties associated with voluntary levies and are reviewing options to move towards a statutory levy arrangement.

The purpose of the economic analyses of RIRDC investments is to assist with portfolio management. In that regard, RIRDC conducts impact evaluations of its programs as they near the end of their five year plan. This process not only provides accountability to the RIRDC Board, its levy paying industries and Government, but also can be used as an input into the development of the next five year plan should program investment be continued.

This report covers the economic analysis of 21 recently completed projects within RIRDC’s Horse RD&E Program.
