Australia has the skill set to develop both seaweed cultivating and harvesting industries. But a key challenge is the development of commercially focused research, development and extension and a clearly articulated strategy to ensure that the industry can progress towards its growth ambitions. This project looks at the long term growth of the Australian seaweed industry, and aims to identify and prioritise critical research, development and extension gaps and opportunities for this highly valuable marine resource. This blueprint is the result of extensive consultation with seaweed value chain stakeholders across production and value-added products, regulators and environmental professionals, and offers a pathway to create a high-tech and high-value seaweed industry.
