Production of peppermint oil in Australia began in Tasmania in the early 1970’s, the goal being in part to replace oil imported from the United States, but also to export premium quality oil to overseas markets. In the years since then the Tasmanian industry, and more recently production in Northeast Victoria, has fluctuated, as growers have struggled to maintain per hectare yields, and gross margins.
Competition from other, more lucrative crops and consequent turnover in growers has left the Tasmanian industry much reduced in recent times from its peak of more than 250ha in 1993. In Victoria, a lack of adequate management information, coupled with more difficult soil types and warmer conditions seems to have prevented producers achieving their potential yields from any but the smallest, most carefully managed sites.
