Investing in research, innovation, and leadership to strengthen our rural industries and regional communities.

AgriFutures Australia is one of 15 Research and Development Corporations (RDCs) that service the Research, Development and Extension (RD&E) needs of Australian rural industries. We represent the research needs for 13 thriving rural industries (chicken meat, rice, honey bee and pollination, ginger, tea tree oil, pasture seeds, export fodder, thoroughbred horses, kangaroo, buffalo, deer, goat fibre and ratite), delivering research and innovation that aims to give our farmers and producers real returns, as well as prepare them to thrive into the future.

What is an RDC and where does AgriFutures fit?

A Research and Development Corporation (RDC) is part of Australia’s rural innovation system. RDCs help industry and government invest in strategic, collaborative research and development that supports the productivity, profitability, competitiveness and sustainability of rural industries.

AgriFutures Australia is one of 15 Research and Development Corporations that operate in Australia. With a head office in Wagga Wagga, NSW, we have a unique role among the RDCs.

Alongside investing in the RD&E needs of our 13 levied industries, we also:

  • Invest in RD&E which aims to drive the growth and development of emerging, high-potential agricultural rural industries such as sesame, industrial hemp and seaweed.
  • Develop and deliver programs that respond to the specific workforce and leadership needs of those working in the Australian agricultural sector.
  • Deliver programs that future-proof Australian rural industries by identifying and responding to national challenges and opportunities which impact the Australian agricultural sector.
  • Engage with the global agrifood innovation system to ensure Australia is a leader in accessing, adopting, developing and exporting agrifood technologies and innovation.

Our priorities

AgriFutures 16:5:5 Roadmap logo with 16 in bold green, and 5:5 and Roadmap in dark green, set on a white background, highlighting research focused on advancing rural Australia.

The 16:5:5 Roadmap, which forms part of the AgriFutures Australia Research and Innovation Strategic Plan 2022-2027, consists of 16 priorities across five focus areas to be delivered over five years.

These priorities have been informed by and developed from engagement with our industries and other stakeholders to help us build on our strong foundation, and to ensure our producers are empowered to adopt the latest science, technology and tools. This will assist in ensuring we have a strong, vibrant and collaborative agricultural sector now and into the future.

Infographic titled 'Our funding' by AgriFutures Australia, showing how two distinct funding streams flow into the organisation and are allocated to different investment areas. The background is split into two sections: a darker sage green on the left representing 'Levy-funded industry investments' and a lighter sage green on the right representing 'Cross-sector research & strategic investments,' with subtle diagonal hatched lines as a decorative element in the top-right area and a dark green leaf shape in the top-right corner. On the left side, two dark charcoal-green circles labelled 'Levy collection' and 'Australian Government matching funding' are joined by a plus sign, with lines flowing down into a central white circle labelled 'AgriFutures Australia.' On the right side, a bright green circle labelled 'Government funding*' also flows down into the same central AgriFutures Australia circle. From the central circle, the flow splits downward into two paths. To the bottom left, a single dark charcoal-green circle reads 'RD&E** investment,' representing the output of levy-funded industry investments. To the bottom right, a branching line connects to three bright green circles in a row labelled 'Flagship programs,' 'Cross-sector initiatives,' and 'Emerging industries,' representing the outputs of cross-sector research and strategic investments. Two footnotes appear at the bottom left: '*Government funding is sometimes referred to as appropriation funding' and '**RD&E = Research, development & extension.'
