Summary

The aim of this project is to determine the impact that N. ceranae is having on the beekeeping industry in Australia, to monitor the progress of infection from the north to the south of the eastern states of Australia, to better understand the pathogenicity of N. ceranae and to identify potential control strategies. To achieve these goals the following objectives have been developed:

Objective Summary

1. Develop a real-time PCR methodology for the more efficient and cheaper detection of N. ceranae and Nosema apis.
2. Monitor the progress of N. ceranae in honey bees in apiaries in eastern Australia
3. Determine the pathogenicity of N. ceranae compared to N. apis
4. Determine production losses caused by N. ceranae
