This report presents the results of a desk-top comparison of fans based on publicly available test data as well as measurement of fan performance and efficiency of fans operating in-situ in meat chicken sheds.  A spreadsheet was developed for comparing and ranking fans against others in terms of energy efficiency, air flow and costs (‘Tunnel Ventilation Fan Comparison Spreadsheet’), and is available on the RIRDC website. For readers interested in methods for measuring fan performance in-situ, a ‘How to’ guide for measuring fan performance and efficiency in meat chicken sheds is also available (RIRDC Publication No. 15/035).

A companion report (‘Reducing costs and energy by replacing inefficient ventilation fans’), is also available on the RIRDC website (RIRDC Publication No. 14/062). It explores the potential economic benefits of replacing old and potentially inefficient ventilation fans in meat chicken sheds with higher efficiency models. A guide and spreadsheet based on this (‘Guide—how to reduce costs and energy by replacing inefficient ventilation fans on meat chicken sheds;  RIRDC Publication No 15/034’), were designed to help growers to understand and evaluate the potential benefits of replacing old and potentially inefficient ventilation fans with higher efficiency models These are also available on the website.
